Delivering for our young people
I am ambitious for the young people in our borough and committed to making sure they get the very best start in life and fulfil their potential. Living in London offers our young people access to incredible opportunities and I will support them and their families to ensure that they can access these opportunities.
£250m has been secured to improve our schools and to build a brand new secondary school in the centre of the borough. This is has only been possible through a Labour mayor and council working closely with Labour in government. This is an unprecedented rebuilding and refurbishment programme, ensuring that our young people are learning in the most modern facilities and creating a valued legacy for future generations.
I made my pledge in 2002 to work with students, parents, teachers and governors to raise standards across all our schools. I promised to extend nursery provision, to improve schools attendance and to secure major investment in our buildings. Those commitments are being delivered. Now we need to build on this progress by focussing on what will improve outcomes for our young people and enhance their life chances.
Performance has improved in our schools and in children's social care. New centres have opened and the capacity to a professional caring service has been strengthened. Over the next four years I will build on these results and make sure that our services are responsive to individual needs through individual learning plans or users having a greater say.
I will make sure that our young people can get the very best, can meet their potential and achieve at high level. I will continue to develop new ways of ensuring our priorities are shaped by the views and knowledge of young people and their families. Through Lewisham's Young Mayor and young advisors we will listen to the views of young people and involve them in our decision-making.
