Stephen Byers MP, the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions today praised Lewisham’s Labour Party Candidate for Mayor of Lewisham for displaying community leadership and supporting investment in strong local communities. He said:

“ The work in Bellingham shows all the elements of what good local government is about: clear leadership, working in partnership with local people and organisations, and investing to build stronger communities.

“ By choosing a Mayor, the people of Lewisham are showing that they want clear community leadership that they can identify with and hold to account.

“I know the Labour’s candidate Steve Bullock has a great track-record in local government – he has contributed much to Lewisham in the past and will give local people clear leadership in the future. I hope local people will support him to be one of London’s first directly elected local Mayors.”

BULLOCK ATTRACTS BROAD SUPPORT

Steve Bullock was formally nominated as a candidate for Mayor of Lewisham last Friday 5 April. Steve is the Labour Party candidate and enjoys the support of members of the local Party. However he has also received backing from a wide cross section of the community and many local supporters who are not members of the Labour Party have also signed his nomination papers.

London’s Burning actress, Shirley Green and businessman and former chairman of the Lewisham Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Martin Coombs have proposed and seconded Steve.

“I am proud to represent the Labour Party but I intend to build a coalition of support which reaches out to all parts of our community. My priority is to improve local services whether the council or others provide them. I believe the Mayor should serve the whole borough – listening, involving people and then offering clear leadership.”
